I Love Him to Pieces (My Boyfriend Is a Monster) by Evonne Tsang

Can love survive the zombie apocalypse? Maybe Dicey’s first chance at a real relationship was dead from the start. She’s the star of her high school baseball team, and Jack’s the star of the science program. Her idea of a study session includes sleeping in the sun, and his idea of a good game involves dungeons and dice. But opposites start attracting when they’re assigned to be partners in a class project. Now an outbreak of a weird infection–it eats your brains and leaves you hungry for more–might not mean just the end of their first date. It might mean the end of everything. Will their relationship fall apart faster than zombies in the Florida sun, or can Dicey and Jack beat the odds and find a happy ending?

This was my first time that I can remember, reading a comic book. Oh wait, I think you call this a graphic novel. It was a pretty quick read and a lot more interesting than I thought it would be. I actually ended up liking it! There was one page (23) where it did take me a while to get what was going on, but that was fine.

I liked in the beginning how they were talking to the egg. It was cute and funny. I loved how she called him his full name, Jack Chen. Back in high school, there were a few people that we called by their full names. Sometimes it just flows better.

Jack Chen was a geek. But he was also an adorable geek. You couldn’t help liking him, and at times feeling bad for him (the whole lonely house thing!). Dicey was well written! She was a jock, but she was also funny. I loved all the lunch room scenes. I really did laugh quite a bit. Remember when Dicey was late for practice and the team went out of their way to hi, very loudly? Hahaha!

Even though this has zombies, it still managed to be sweet. Ahhhh, young love! I liked how they were so different and got partnered up because of a science project. I thought the dialog between everyone was realistic. Especially the teenagers!

I actually wouldn’t have minded if this one was a little longer. I don’t think we get enough story once the zombies come. But since this will be a series (is that what they call them in comic book land?) of sorts, it doesn’t matter too much.

Overall, I’m glad I read it. It was fast and fun. The drawings went so well with it. Remember when Jack Chen blushed? Wasn’t that so adorable??

Zombie fans, if you get the chance to read this, please do! You can thank me later. I gave it four out of five stars.
