Paranormalcy by Kiersten White

Nov 9, 2010 by

Weird as it is working for the International Paranormal Containment Agency, Evie’s always thought of herself as normal. Sure, her best friend is a mermaid, her ex-boyfriend is a faerie, she’s falling for a shape-shifter, and she’s the only person who can see through paranormals’ glamours, but still. Normal. Only now paranormals are dying, and Evie’s dreams are filled with haunting voices and mysterious prophecies. She soon realizes that there may be a link between her abilities and the sudden rash of deaths. Not only that, but she may very well be at the center of a dark faerie prophecy promising destruction to all paranormal creatures. So much for normal.

Yeahhhhh, so Paranormalcy by Kiersten White started out pretty funny. I kind of liked Evie. Though I did think she was much less mature than what you think someone would be, based on her level of confinement.

The bad guy was ok. I didn’t really see her as intimidating. I mean, she really wasn’t. Her wrath was kind of peaceful. It’s hard to explain but I felt like they were just rumors of a bad guy, that there was no actual bad guy in this book.

I did not like the IPCA. I thought what they did to paranormals was wrong, wrong, wrong. It was slavery, slavery I tell you!

I was all set to complain about the lack of answers in this book. Anywho, it turns out that this will be a series! Either way, there was no explanation of what paranormalcy is, nothing about how that stun gun worked. You mean to tell me not one single PN was immune to a measly stun gun?? How the heck can you be paranormal then? I’d call you different, but not paranormal!
I think this was the first book that I’ve read where the paranormals were extremely lame and so unimpressive. They were weaker than humans. They let humans control them. How could you not know basic self defense? I mean, they let themselves get caught by a 16 year old girl with a stun gun who admittedly does not work out!!! Do they have bricks for feet or something?? Really, they sit and patiently take accept it and politely ask questions. Me? I’d ask a question to distract her, karate chop her in the neck, and run like there’s a 49 cent sale on best sellers at the nearest bookstore.

I think most people would still like this one. It was funny in most places and extremely clean. There was no excessive violence and no bad language. It was lighthearted but just not enough to get more stars from me. The ending was kind of lame and anti-climatic. Now that I think about it, maybe the book is more middle grade than Young Adult? If I thought of it as middle grade then my rating would likely be a little higher.

I liked Lend, Lissa and David. There was someone else I liked but I couldn’t read the name I wrote in my notes (and I already returned the book)! I still don’t know about Reth. What’s his deal?

And the cover lies! It is a beautiful cover, but it was all lies. The cover makes you think it’s dark, but it’s not. It’s light and campy (not a bad thing, but the cover lies!)

Final Verdict: 2 out of 5 Rarrs for me!

I originally posted this over at Goodreads, but with minor changes.

Thanks Amy, that’s pretty much how I review them. You have to still read them though! We have to be able to compare. Are you generally a harder reviewer?

    • I am and I’m not at the same time. In some ways I am very hard and I expect a lot but some stories just grab me and I’m not as hard. If that makes sense!

Oh that makes sense. I do that as well. There are some books that I really, really shouldn’t like, based on my other reviews and other things I don’t care for. But, I end up excusing everything and liking the book!

  2. Wow I like to see different reviews on things, and honesty as well. To be honest I don’t think I’ve seen a review like this one for this book. Most all praise the book. I still wanna read it though. I did order but i don’t know if I’ll be getting it. Stupid book clubs online mess orders up. Anyways thanks for a honest review. :)

Hahaha! I love getting surprises in the mail. And thanks for your comments. I do try to write honest reviews. Sometimes I read books back to back, and try to get in my reviews before I move on to the next one. Usually, these are my first reactions when I’m done. Sometimes I go back and change things. I may bump it up a star or knock it down.

I can see why people gave it high reviews, it just didn’t work out for me :) And you should still read it, it’s definitely worth reading.

    • I’m def gonna read it. That is if I ever get it.

Sooo…the antagonist and protagonist basically sucked? How is the premise of this book even worthwhile then?

    • Peeptastic

Hmmm, because it’s light and fun? And it’s clean. Maybe I took it too seriously since I don’t see to many other people on my side of the fence. Haha. And you get to meet Tasey….

  4. I just finished this one, and I liked it enough for me to be curious about the next book, and actually pick up a fairy book. Oh, and I liked Tasey, too. :D

I totally agree on the cover, too! The cover gave me an impression that it’s a dark novel, too. Although…that is Evie on her prom, right?

      TASEY!Hahaha. Yep, that’s her dress. I think it’s pretty. Were you anti-fairy before? :P

    • Nah, not really anti-fairy, but I just never picked up any fairy book before because I put them in the same level as vampires, and I don’t like vampires anymore. But now I’m kind of interested, especially with the Seelie and Unseelie courts and all that. :)

  5. Nice review. I had been wanting to read this one, but now I’m sort of “meh” about it. maybe I’ll grab it at the library one of these days…

Light and campy, light and campy. Definitely pick it up when you need a break. :P

  6. This is the first not-so-good review I have read about this book so far…. I’m sorry you didn’t like it :(

Oh Misty it wasn’t so bad! I enjoyed writing the review at least. And it wasn’t one of those books that I just wish I’d never bothered with. Plus, it was a clean read and I always love when I can say that about a book (um, as clean as a paranormal can get).
